Self portrait study. Spent more time on this than I had originally anticipated, but I really wanted to get the likeness right.

More recent self portrait:

I really like your portrait! I think you've done a great job showing where the light is coming from. Also the proportions of your face, neck and shoulders are well done too. You can tell the time you put into it. Working in a monochromatic tone can be difficult sometimes, but your shading is really well defined. When I do a self portrait I find my expression changes while I'm working on it. (mainly due to frustration) but you kept a still face which isn't easy. If there would be one thing to change it would be to maybe put some texture in your hair or add some highlights. Other than that is is a really well done portrait!

Wonderful. How long does it take for you to get your painting so smooth?! I love your hair by the way. :)

Thanks! I just cut my hair really short the other day so it doesn't look like this anymore, heh, but I do like how it looked here. About getting it so smooth, I don't actually spend a lot of time smoothing things out. I tend to blend and smooth out the values as I work through the image, correcting inaccuracies and working in the details. Thanks again!

Do you use the airbrush tool a lot to do your smoothing?

No, I don't use the airbrush tool or the smudge tool at all. I start off with a large high opacity brush to block in the shapes, and I make my brush smaller and lower the opacity as I get further and further into the refining stages. I uploaded a crop of this image at 100% zoom so you can see that at full size, it's not really smooth at all. It's actually a bit choppy and textured, especially around the nose.

great work on the self portrait D, you really got the likeness, i recognized you at first glance :D the soft shadows look great & i dig the painted feel it has to it. the shadow in the inner ear looks a little too dark though & your eyes are a bit small IMO. Fantastic work overall :D
