This was a commission for a family friend. The dragon's design is swan-inspired.

Photoshop CS2. Crit welcome.

Hey there from Feedback Frenzy!

First off, great use of lighting and shadows to create volume in this. Would I be correct in assuming you had a reference--possibly cat's paws--for the dragon paws? Anyway, I like the color balance in this. The girl's dress does a nice job of complimenting the overall blue tones in this piece, adding just the right touch of warmth.

I will admit the dragon's neck (that angle looks almost Moebius-like) is throwing me off, but I assume you had a reason for choosing swans. Is it possible the lighting is a little off on one side of the neck? (I do not look at swans very often, sadly.) What's bothering me more, though, is the dragon's right wing--it looks like the join to the body is really big (which might just be a matter of expecting a dragon to have something narrower, clearly this one is more birdlike) and the light behavior seems a bit odd. Above all those bottom feathers aren't as luminescent as the ones on the left wing.

However, the muscling on its body looks pretty good. Also, the ground texture helps add a nice element of semi-realism to what is obviously a fantasy piece. I could easily see this as a book cover or some kind of poster, the composition is solid and the colors are soothing.

Thanks again for the detailed critique! Yeah there are a lot of little weird things in this image because I was working more from imagination than usual. I did use a photo of a cat for the paws, and I think that stands out (I don't mind that it has catlike paws but I think the treatment appears different in that area). But about this part -"Above all those bottom feathers aren't as luminescent as the ones on the left wing."- I'm not really sure what you mean, you think I pushed the translucency too far? Because I've seen some convincing photos with very bright backlit wings; I actually thought I hadn't pushed it far enough [link] [link]
